Tumpek Uduh Bali - A Manifestation Of Concern For Plants

Tumpek Uduh Bali, Tumpek Uduh Pengatag, Tumpek Uduh Day

Tumpek Uduh (Pengatag) is an expression of gratitude to Ida Sang Hyang Widi Wasa (The Creator) in manifestation as Hyang Sangkara for the grace of healthy plants in sustaining life on Earth.

This celebration is conducted once every 210 days, exactly on the day of Saniscara Kliwon wuku Wariga, or 25 days before Galugan Day. It also has several designations such as: Tumpek Wariga, Tumpek Bubuh, Tumpek Atag, and Tumpek Pengarah.



This celebration comes with offerings of gruel, made of flour. Accompanied by a procession of "ngatag", tapped the stems of plants are consecrated accompanied with a prayer or "mantra" as follows:

"Kaki-kaki, Dadong dija? Dadong jumah gelem panes dingin ngetor. Ngetor ngeed-ngeed-ngeed-ngeed, ngeed kaja, ngeed kelod, ngeed kangin, ngeed kauh, buin selae lemeng galungan mebuah pang ngeed"


When translated means:

"Grandpa, where is grandma? Grandma's at home, she got a fever and shivering. Shivering heavy-heavy-heavy-heavy, heavy northern, heavy southern, heavy eastern, heavy western, the next twenty-five days is Galungan Day, fruitful with heavy"


The prayer or mantra is a figurative meaning, inherited in every generation and is often heard during the celebration of Tumpek Pengatag or Tumpek Uduh Day.

While there may be differences in the pronunciation of each area in Bali. However, it has the same purpose as a manifestation of concern for plants. Henceforth, fruit and flowers produced by these plants can be used by the community, especially in the celebration of Galungan.
