The existence of Uluwatu Temple today represents a long series of stories. It’s begin when the arrival of a holy hermit named Empu Kuturan (hermit from Hindu Kingdom in Java) in the 11th century to this location.

Empu Kuturan expanding the area at the site of the temple which is claimed to have been there before his visit.

After a period of time, another hermit from East Java named Dang Hyang Nirartha come to this temple. He was credited for constructing the "Padmasana" shrines. Then Dang Hyang Nirartha is claimed to have attained "Moksa" here.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu Cliff Temple Bali

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is very famous and unique for the privilege of its location, perched atop a 70 meter high cliff overlooking the open sea. A symbol of the meeting point between the sea and the mainland. Visitor can have good angle for capturing the sunset with the temple perched right over the high cliff.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is located in Pecatu Village, in the District of Kuta Selatan, Badung Regency, Bali. It's located just 21 Kilometers southern of Ngurah Rai International Airport (about 45 minutes). From Jimbaran Beach is about 15 Kilometers (30 minutes). But if you went to Pura Uluwatu from Nusa Dua Enclave, it's just about 19 kilometer (40 minutes).

This magical temple is also close to several beach locations such as the Pandawa Beach, Green Bowl Beach, Suluban Beach, Padang-Padang Beach, Bingin Beach, Dreamland Beach, and Balangan Beach. Tourist attractions Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) is also a pathway to Pura Luhur Uluwatu from Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Average temperature in Badung Regency range from 22,8 - 32,9 degrees Celsius. Wind speed range from 4,2-8,0 knot (about 4,8-9,2 mph or miles per hours). Humidity range from 77-84 %. The area of Uluwatu Bali (in the district of Kuta Selatan) has high rainfall on the month of December, January, and February.

Uluwatu Temple Bali Kecak Dance

Kecak is a unique Balinese dance performance. The performance is played by dancers and dozens of men without musical instruments. The men would sit in a circle, raising their hands up and voice calling "Cak...Cak...Cak..." with a certain rhythm.

The dancers of Kecak Dance wearing rags grid squares. The dance tells the story of Ramayana when the war between Rama and Rahwana to rescue Sinta. The show is performed every day at 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. for an hour. There’s no performance during Pengerupukan Day or Nyepi Day.

Kecak Dance is performed on the open air stage with a position little bit higher out of the surroundings. It allows the visitor to enjoy the performances of Kecak Dance as well as witness the splendor of sunset, the open sea and the temple of Uluwatu at the edge of the cliff.

Uluwatu Temple Sunset Best Spot

Pura Luhur Uluwatu has best spot for sunset-watching that must seen by visitor. The spots connected by the stepped paths. The closest spot is located at the southern part of the temple just follow the stepped paths.

The best and closest spot to take picture with the temple hangin on the cliff above the sea as the backdrop. Keep walking to the end of the stepped paths and you will be arrive at wide natural grass field which has white high cliff scenery.

Another sunset spot is located at the northern of the temple. Visitor only need to follow the stepped paths to the north. This location offer the best angle for sunset but a little bit far from the temple. Visitor need to carefully walk through the stepped path. The stepped path can be very slippery in the rainy season.

Uluwatu Temple Bali Dress Code

To entering Pura Luhur Uluwatu (related to the local government rule), visitor are required to properly dressed. The entrance officer will provide you with the sarongs and sashes or you can use yours. There is entrance fee and a normal parking charge.

Up this moment many Hindu people of different regions in Bali or outside come to Pura Uluwatu for worship. Locals also held ceremonial offerings as a symbol of gratitude to Hyang Widhi.

Monkey Forest Bali Uluwatu

Uluwatu Bali is influenced by D type climate or Moderately Climate (based on Schmidt-Ferguson climate classification maps). Moderate Climate here have a humid season which begins from November continues to April. Dry season runs from April to October.

Along the cliffs near Uluwatu Temple is covered by trees with a seasonal characteristic of the deciduous forest during the dry season and lush back during the rainy season.

The forest is a habitat for long-tailed gray macaques. This playful macaques share the common characteristics of those in Bali's other notable monkey forests such as Sangeh, Ubud, Alas Kedaton and others area.

For the monkey around the temple or stepped path, visitors need to keep an eye to the belongings. These creatures, for some reason, often snatch the belongings from visitors such as sunglasses, handbag, hat and anything else.
