The source mentions the term of "Tri Hita Karana" first appeared during the "Konferensi Daerah I Badan Perjuangan Umat Hindu Bali" which took place at the Perguruan Dwijendra Denpasar on November 11, 1966. The conference is organized on the awareness of Hindu people to participate in the development of the nation towards prosperous society based on Pancasila.

It is derived from the word "Tri" meaning three, "Hita" which means happiness, and "Karana" which means cause. As a whole is defined as the three causes that create happiness. This concept consists of three parts: Parahyangan, Pawongan, and Palemahan.

Parahyangan is keeping harmony with God. This is an expression of gratitude and devotion to God, Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, for blessings and gifts in this world.

Pawongan is keeping harmony with each other. Man can not live alone in this world and therefore, harmony with others must always be well preserved and compassionate. This will create security and inner peace in society.

Palemahan is keeping harmony with the environment or nature. Humans need nature as the fulfillment of the necessities of life as well as a place to shelter. Balinese believe that the good environment will give them a better life.

This spirit is reflected in various aspects of Balinese life. For example in the implementation of daily rituals, mutual assistance, ceremonies such as Tumpek Wariga (Tumpek Uduh), Tumpek Uye (Tumpek Kandang), and the implementation of brata (custom prohibition) during the Nyepi Day. This concept is also used in space and architectural design, as well as in traditional irrigation systems (subak) in Bali.
