The Dance of The Bumblebees Story

The story of Oleg Tamulilingan start from John Coast (1916-1989), born in Kent (England), was so impressed with Balinese arts and intend to promoting it to Europe and the United States. John Coast interested in the appearance of the gong Peliatan Ubud, with the game of drum by AA Gde Mandera, so expressive and eligible to appear on the international stage.

In addition to gamelan music, Coast also want to bring a beautiful and romantic dance. On the advice of Mandera, Coast contact I Ketut Marya (I Mario). Coast also show the classic book of ballet to Mario, which there are photographs of the duet in the story of "Sleeping Beauty".

Mario who was finally inspired, then create a dance called Oleg Tamulilingan. To bring this new dance, Mario chose I Gusti Ayu Raka Rasmin who have a good basic dance as a female beetle and I Wayan Sampih of Bongkasa (Badung) as the male beetle.

To organize the gamelan, Mario involves I Wayan Sukra, percussion experts of Marga (Tabanan). In addition, he also involved the percussion experts of Gong Peliatan to create on the musical dance, they are Gusti Kompyang, AA Gde Mandera, and I Wayan Lebah.

This dance was originally called Legong Prembon. But John Coast seems less pleasing, due to the name of "Legong Prembon" are difficult to translate into English. Furthermore, Mario changed the name into "Oleg Tamulilingan Mangisep Sari" and in the end (by mutual agreement) the dance is called "Oleg Tamulilingan" or "The Bumblebee Dance".

Oleg in Balinese means "shake". A dance movement that depicts the female beetle in displaying a swaying movement, graceful, likes a tree blowing in the wind.

This movement appears in the "pengadeng", when the female dancer holding oncer, with both arms bent-crossed across her chest, as she swung to the right and left sides. Therefore, the ideal actress to bring this character is a tall-slender woman so that it will create the impression of "Ngoleg".
