Wayang Sapuh Leger Art in Bali

Wayang Sapuh Leger is a traditional performing art in Bali and is held as a purification ritual (ruwatan). This is one of the three sacred puppet arts or Wali, namely: Wayang Lemah, Wayang Sudamala, and Wayang Sapuh Leger (Wayang Sapuleger).

The term sapuh leger comes from the word "sapuh" which means to clean, and "leger" (leget) which means polluted or dirty. Sapuh Leger means cleansing or purification of spiritual impurities in someone born during the Wuku Wayang.

Wuku Wayang itself consists of seven days (one week), starting from Sunday to Saturday. Local people believe that these seven days are considered to have an unfavorable natural influence.

Every child born in Wuku Wayang is believed by Balinese Hindus as a sacred birth or "melik". In addition, there are also concerns related to the child's life journey being bad or plagued by disaster. Therefore, the family will undertake this sacred purification ritual for the child so as to obtain salvation, serenity, and long life.

Wayang Sapuleger tells the story of Lord Shiva has sons named Bhatara Rare Kumara and Bhatara Kala. Lord Shiva gives blessing to Kala, that everyone who is born in wuku Wayang can become his prey.

Kala later knowing that Rare Kumara was also born in wuku Wayang, so that he pursues Rare Kumara as his prey. Kumara keep run and hide until he spotted a puppet show, and the puppeteer (Dalang Samirana) hide him in the bamboo resonance of Gender Wayang. "Kala arrived at the show but did not find Kumara. Due to hunger, Kala eats the offering until nothing left.

The Puppeteer knows this and asks Kala to restore the offerings that have been eaten. Kala could not undertake the request. Then Kala promised to Dalang that he would not prey on children who were born in wuku Wayang that has performed the "Wayang Sapuleger".

Wayang Sapuleger is held on Tumpek Wayang (Saniscara Kliwon wuku Wayang) day. During the ritual, the men will be carrying agricultural tools (tengala/plow, whip, penampad). Meanwhile, the women carry a loom (blida) and rice harvesting tools (ani-ani/anggapan).

This sacred performance is usually carried out during the day or adjusted to the best time for holding the ceremony. At the end of the show, a procession is usually held by Jro Dalang to ask for holy water (tirta panglukatan) or tirta Wayang Sapuleger. This art performance is accompanied by a melodious gamelan gender wayang.
