Sugihan Ceremony - A Symbol of Purification

Sugihan Ceremony, Sugihan Bali dan Sugihan Jawa, Hari Raya Sugian

The Sugihan ceremony (or Sugian) commenced the week before Galungan. The Balinese Hindus will celebrate the ceremony season consecutively, which is a symbol of purification, consist of: Sugian Tenten, Sugian Jawa and Sugian Bali. Thirdly this ceremony falls on Wuku Sungsang, celebrated every 210 days.

Sugihan Tenten is the first Sugian, celebrated on Wednesday Pon wuku Sungsang. The word "tenten" identified with "enten" which means "remember", reminding that Galungan will arrive. All obligations must be prepared.

The Royal Palace Ubud or Puri Saren Agung Ubud Bali is a beautiful palace, has magnificent architecture, and still maintained until now. The palace (puri) was built during the reign of Ida Tjokorda Putu Kandel (1800-1823). This palace was opened to the public since the 1930s, on the governance of Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati (1910-1978), the last ruling monarch of Ubud.

The palace is located at the intersection of Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Raya Ubud, across from the Ubud Art Market. Ubud area has a tropical cool climate, regarded as the cultural center of Bali; there are many artists' workshops, galleries and museums.

Ubud Monkey Forest Sanctuary or Mandala Wisata Wenara Wana Ubud is a monkey sanctuary for the long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicuiaris) and there is also temple that is highly respected especially by local residents, Pura Dalem Padangtegal.

The orest (sanctuary) is located in the Desa Pekraman Padangtegal, southern of Ubud Village, in the district of Ubud, Gianyar Regency, Bali. This forest was originally named Alas Pemaosan, then in 1991 changed to Wenara Wana. The name is taken from the Sanskrit, a sacred language, and reflects the sacredness of Hanuman, the Monkey God.

Oleg Tamulilingan Dance or Tari Oleg Tamulilingan Bali is one of the great creations of the dance artist from Tabanan, I Ketut Marya or better known as I Mario. This dance is known as "The Bumblebee Dance", was created in 1952 at the request of John Coast (England).

Oleg Tamulilingan describes a pair of beetles, male and female, playing happily, siphon the pollen, and having fun in the garden. The beauty is radiated in the movements of the dancers along with the accompaniment of Gong Kebyar. A dazzling movement of male dancer playing "kancut" and kepet (fan), while the female playing "oncer" (shawl) with dynamic movements, beautiful, and a bit aggressive.

Baris Tunggal Dance or Tari Baris Tunggal Bali was created in the early 20th century. This dance is usually performed as the opening dance for the secular show and sometimes as the lead figure in the dance-drama. Baris Tunggal or Solo Warrior dance is always performed by a young boy, occasionally by a young girl.

Movements in this dance tell the toughness of Balinese soldier at that time. The dance movement is steady, firm, energetic and dynamic, accompanied by eye movement (sledet) which constantly changing. This reflects the nature of a soldier who is aware of the situation around him.

Tari Tani Bali (Farming Dance) is created by I Wayan Beratha in 1957. This dance emerges along with the Tari Tenun (Weaving Dance) and Tari Nelayan (Fishing Dance) in the era of 1950s. Tani dance showing the everyday life of Balinese, particularly the work or activities of farmer in Bali.

Tani dance usually performed in groups by male and female dancers. The movements in this dance depict the activities of farmers from preparing the land, plant the seeds, up to take care of their plants. This dance is indeed present a beautiful and elegant movements.

Panyembrama Balinese Dance is a secular dance form, become an alluring dance through a combination of the graceful movement, gamelan music, and elegant dancer’s costume. This dance is designed by I Wayan Berata and was performed for the first time in the Pandaan Festival, in 1971.

Panyembrama dance is performed by a group of skillful female dancers, accompanied by live music of Balinese gamelan. Even though the dance has no story to tell, it is considered to be extremely beautiful composition due to the dance movements are mostly used to welcome god into the temple.

Tenun Dance or Tari Tenun Bali depicts women who are weaving, which is the population's daily activities at that time. This dance was created by I Nyoman Ridet and the music is composed by I Wayan Likes, both from Kerobokan (in Badung), in the year of 1957.

Tenun Dance is a group dance, performed by 3-5 women. In most of the dance, the movement is executed in a kneeling position. Tenun depict spinning thread, wrapping the loom, and weaving. The dance was so lovely, graceful and elegant.

Sekar Jagat Dance is a variant of the Balinese welcome dance, choreographed by the dance artists, Ni Luh Swasthi Wijaya Bandem in 1993. The dance is based on the sacred Rejang from Asak (in Karangasem) but far more elegant, stately, and formal in presentation.

The dance is accompanied by gamelan music, composed by I Nyoman Windha and is based on the Selonding music of Tenganan Pegringsingan Village.

Kebyar Trompong Dance and Kebyar Duduk Dance are a variation of Kebyar Dance. In Kebyar Trompong, the dancer has to dance and play the musical instrument called Terompong at the same time, collaborating with gamelan accompaniment.

Terompong or Trompong is one of gamelan instrument. It is a long instrument, with a set of metal bowl-like gongs, placed on a large wooden frame and decorated by carved motifs and prada. Thus the name of the "Terompong" dance comes from the instrument itself.
