Nyakan Diwang Tradition In Banjar Village, Buleleng Bali

The Nyakan Diwang tradition is a unique ritual performed by the people in Banjar Village and several surrounding villages in Buleleng Regency. This is held every year in a series of Nyepi Day celebrations, precisely a day after Nyepi (Ngembak Geni). This activity is carried out early in the morning around 4 am.

The word nyakan diwang comes from the local terms “nyakan” meaning cooking and “diwang” meaning outside. This is an activity of cooking food and side dishes that are done outside the house.

This tradition is celebrated as a form of house cleaning, especially the “penyepian” of the kitchen in every family in Banjar Village. All residents cook using traditional stoves and firewood to maintain the authenticity of the tradition.

This is a belief that has been passed down that by carrying out this tradition, all members of the family and community will avoid being "leteh" (negative influences). This ritual is also intended to strengthen the sense of brotherhood between residents.

This activity is carried out on the side of the road in front of each resident's house. The men are in charge of preparing a traditional stove of bricks and firewood. Meanwhile, the women prepare water, rice, side dishes, ingredients, and cooking utensils.

All family members are outside the house to help cook or sit with other family members. In addition, this moment is also used by the community to visit their relatives. This is an ancestral tradition that continues to be preserved.
