Pura Ratu Bagus Penyarikan belongs to the group of Catur Lawa and also one of the important temples in Besakih Temple Complex. The Catur Lawa Temple is a group consisting of four temples and has a close relationship with Pura Penataran Agung Besakih.
The temple is located in Besakih Village, Rendang, Karangasem Regency, Bali. The public transportation service to Besakih Temple is still limited and a bit difficult. Even so, visitors can order travel tour services, a taxi, or you can rent a vehicle and drive yourself to this location.
When traveling to temples in Bali, visitors are usually asked to wear a sarong (cloth) and waist sash. This is common in Bali and at the same time to respect the culture in the temple. It would be nice to prepare some money beforehand, there is a chance you will be charged (entrance ticket) to enter the temple.
This holy temple is situated east of Pura Pentaran Agung and there are also pedharman temples around it. The temple is dedicated to worshiping Ida Ratu Bagus Penyarikan. It is said that the word "penyarikan" means a clerk or secretary.
The temple, as part of Catur Lawa temple, has the responsibility (penyade) for the Catur Lokapala Temple. The Catur Lokapala is a group of four temples (pura gelap, pura kiduling kreteg, pura ulun kulkul, and pura batu madeg) which are likened to lotus flower petals encircle the pollen or Padma Tiga (Penataran Agung).
During the procession of Melasti or bathing ritual (purification) at the celebration of Bhatara Turun Kabeh (the god descend all together) in Besakih, the god symbols from Pura Catur Lawa are at the forefront and in sequences, starting from: Ida Ratu Pande, Ida Ratu Pasek, Ida Ratu Penyarikan, and Ida Ratu Dukuh Sagening. This procession starts from Besakih Temple in Karangasem Regency to Segara Watu Klotok Temple in Klungkung Regency.
The Catur Lawa temples are as follows:
- Pura Ratu Pasek, in White color, as penyade or has responsibility for Pura Gelap (east).
- Pura Ratu Pande (Pura Penataran Pande), in Red, as penyade or has responsibility for Pura Kiduling Kreteg (south).
- Pura Ratu Bagus Penyarikan, in Yellow, as penyade or has responsibility for Pura Ulun Kulkul (west).
- Pura Ida Ratu Dukuh (Seganing), in Black, as penyade or has responsible for Pura Batu Madeg (north).
Each temple has a role/task that aims to support (aiding and accompanying) during big ceremonies at Besakih Temple. Pura Ratu Penyarikan plays a role in managing administrative requirements (secretary) so that the ceremony in Besakih Temple runs smoothly.
Each temple usually has "pangamong" or caretaker, a group of citizens who are responsible for everything in the temple, so that it can function properly.
The pangamong or caretaker for Ratu Bagus Penyarikan Temple is the family of Puri Blahbatuh and the descent group called Pasek Penyarikan Dauh Bale Agung. The piodalan ceremony in the temple falls on Anggara Kliwon wuku Prangbakat (Tuesday-Kliwon of the week Prangbakat).
