Pura Penataran Pande Besakih, Penataran Pande Temple Besakih Bali

This temple is situated in Besakih Village, Rendang, Karangasem Regency, Bali. The public transportation service to Besakih Temple is a bit limited. Even so, visitors can go the temple by ordering tour services, a taxi, or you can rent a vehicle and drive yourself to this location.

When traveling to temples around Bali, visitors are usually asked to wear a sarong (cloth) and waist sash. This is common in Bali and at the same time to respect the culture in the temple. It would be nice to prepare some money beforehand, there is a chance you will be charged (entrance ticket) to enter the temple.

Penataran Pande Temple as one of the temples in Catur Lawa has close links with Pura Penataran Agung and also has a responsibility ("penyade") to the Catur Loka Pala Temple. The Catur Loka Pala is a group of four temples that are likened to lotus petals which surround flower pollen, consisting of: Pura Gelap, Pura Kiduling Kreteg, Pura Ulun Kulkul, and Pura Batu Madeg.

During the annual festival celebration of Bhatara Turun Kabeh (all god descend all together) which focused in Penataran Agung Temple, it is usually accompanied by a procession of Melasti or bathing ritual from Besakih Temple to Segara Watu Klotok Temple in Klungkung Regency.

In this holy procession the god symbols of Catur Lawa are at the forefront, lead the procession in a predetermined sequence, starting from: Ida Ratu Pande, Ida Ratu Pasek, Ida Ratu Penyarikan, and Ida Ratu Dukuh Sagening.

The Catur Lawa temples are as follows:

  • Pura Ratu Pasek, in White color, as penyade or has responsibility for Pura Gelap in the East.
  • Pura Ratu Pande (Penataran Pande), in Red, has responsibility for Pura Kiduling Kreteg in the South.
  • Pura Ratu Bagus Penyarikan, in Yellow, has responsibility for Pura Ulun Kulkul in the West.
  • Pura Ida Ratu Dukuh (Seganing), in Black, has responsibility for Pura Batu Madeg in the North.

The Catur Lawa Temple has an important role to support the ceremony held in Besakih Temple. Penataran Pande Temple (the Pande group) is assigned as the group in charge in providing and arranging equipment and ornaments during the ceremony.

Each temple usually has a "pangamong" or caretaker, a group or citizen who is responsible for everything in the temple so that it can function properly. The pangamong for Penataran Pande Temple is the group of Pande Besakih or Pande Bangke Maong.

This is a holy place for worship, sacred and respected. Pura Penataran Pande Besakih is dedicated to worshiping Ida Ratu Bagus Pande. The piodalalan ceremony at this temple falls on Saniscara Kliwon wuku Landep or often called "Tumpek Landep" (Saturday Kliwon of the week Landep).
